Shihan Barry Johnston has been practicing martial arts since 1972 and teaching in his own full time schools and classes since 1985. In 1981, Johnston was selected to represent Australia in the South Pacific Kyokushin Karate Championships held in Jakarta. In 2006 Shihan Johnston was inducted into the Australasian Martial Arts Hall of Fame (AMAHOF) for his lifelong dedication to martial arts teaching. He was also awarded the Karate Instructor of the year for Victoria in the same ceremony. Shihan Johnston has received a variety of awards for his work in martial art and in particular his work in pioneering martial arts instructor training. Shihan Johnston is responsible for martial arts being accepted under the National Qualifications Framework as a formal government recognised qualification.
Shihan Johnston is “Coach Check” registered and holds a Diploma in Sports Coaching for Martial Arts.

Richard Norton is the Chief Instructor of the BJJ courses at Bendigo MMA academy. Richard is arguably one of the world's most accredited martial art artists, having earned black belts in multiple martial art systems. Richard Norton is the quintessential all-round master as his influence in the martial arts training is profound. Endorsements from Hollywood actors like Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan and many other celebrities add to his repertoire. Richard has trained celebrities like Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie, Scarlet Johannsen, Will Smith, and Charlie Hunnan, just to mention a few. Professor Norton part of the famed team Norton group, is most importantly, loved and revered by the many thousands of teens, kids, and adults who were and are his students at the academy. This is owing to his extensive knowledge about the different mixed martial arts courses and how he helped build Bendigo’s own renowned MMA centre. You can be rest assured that training and lessons imparted by Professor Norton at the centre is as good as it gets.

Shihan Frank McKinley is a popular and dedicated mixed martial arts artist. He is part of the elite Bendigo MMA team who has coached and taken classes for a long list of kids, teenagers and adults alike. Many have taken karate class under him and earned a black belt under his own personal guidance. Shihan Mckinley has a deep and impressive understanding of karate, and why wouldn’t he? Shihan McKinley also holds black belts in Shotokan Karate, Goju Kai Karate and Te Shin Kai Karate (Kyokushinkaikan.) Shihan Frank’s dedication to any child, adult or teen students has seen them go on to win National titles in Kata and Kumite. His dedication and the way he offers karate lessons to his students of all age groups, be it a child, teen, or even adult alike is what makes him a true martial arts leader. Shihan Frank is “Coach Check” registered and holds a Diploma in Sports Coaching for Martial Arts.

Coach Clint is a well-rounded and skilful martial artist who has well honed coaching class skills that bring out the best in all of his students who range from teenagers to children’s of all age groups. Coach Clint was brought up with martial arts in his blood. Having been trained initially by his father in Taekwondo, Clint has chosen martial arts as his profession and as a result, dedicates most of his time to learning the latest skills and concepts and passes it on to his teenager, adult students. Coach Clint conducts BJJ for children’s and adults as well as Kickboxing and MMA classes. Expect to sweat and most importantly understand the intricacies and the science behind mixed martial arts. Coach Clint Harris is a team member of the Bendigo MMA centre and is “Coach Check” registered.

Sensei Sarahis, a Karate Kumite Champion has earned the reputation of being a valuable technical coach and a staff member of the karate school. Sensei Sarah is well-respected by her teams and peers. It is her ability to adapt her teaching methodologies to assist beginners who range from kids to teens and more to help learn complex routines and practices. This has earned her the reputation of being a knowledgeable and approachable coach. Any child or teenager students are in good hands when Sensei leads the class.
Sempai Sarah Richardson is “Coach Check” registered and holds a Level III in Martial Arts Coaching.

Sempai Tamara is a champion kata and kumite competitor who has earned the respect of all who know her. Sempai Tamara is a popular coach as she holds the reputation of helping all student teams take their own martial arts game to the next level. Sempai has been training martial arts most of her adult life and is a role model to all karate students at the Bendigo Mixed Martial Arts Academy.
Sempai Tamara Thompson is “Coach Check” registered and holds a Diploma in Sports Coaching for Martial Arts.

Sempai Lee has a long history of training and competing successfully in full contact Karate. Sempai Lee is assistant instructor at Bendigo’s Dojo and the principle instructor at the Castlemaine Dojo. His experience as a member of the Victoria Police and training his two children training places him in a good position to understand the needs of our present day teens and youth. Bendigo MMA is privileged to have Sempai Lee as a tough and knowledgeable coach in Karate. This makes him an invaluable team member and martial arts coach for younger students and older adults. Sempai Lee is Coach Check approved!

Sempai Ian is a well-rounded martial artist with extensive full contact karate experience. Sempai Ian helps run our lunchtime classes and has a quality of guiding new students and helps achieve their goals.

Sempai Amelia is a well-respected staff member and a teacher in our junior Karate classes. She is also a proficient Cage Fitness instructor. Her endearing and friendly manner makes her popular among children and parents alike.
